Biography of Leon Battista Alberti
Leon Battista Alberti was born in 1404 and died in 1472. He was an author, artist, architect, poet, priest, linguist, philosopher, and cryptographer. His life is described Giorgio Vasari’s ‘Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects’.

1404 – He is born in Genoa, Italy.
1431 – He travels to Rome where he takes holy orders and enters the service of the papal court.
1435 – He begins his first major written work, ‘Della pittura’.
1438 – He begins to focus on architecture.
1446 – His first major architecture commission is commissioned.
1447 – He becomes the architectural advisor to Pope Nicholas V.
1450 – He completes a project commissioned by Sigismondo Malatesta.
1452 – He completes ‘De re aedificatoria’.
1471 – He completes his most significant work, the Basilica of Sant’Andrea.
1472 – He dies in Rome, Italy.
